Blue Yeti Pro Multipattern Review

Blue Microphones is well known in the home recording world for its innovate, compact Snowball USB microphone. The Snowball is a great starter mic, but does not offer many options on-board for recording control. The Blue Yeti Pro makes a great addition to the home recording studios of individuals who are already comfortable with the Snowball (or the original Yeti model). The Yeti Pro offers great service to pros, but is also a good mic for new sound artists and recordists to hone their budding skills.

The Blue Yeti Pro boasts a proprietary, completely unique 3-condenser capsule design to handle all of your recording needs. On board, it offers a great range of recording options. The mic gain control and pattern selector buttons are located on one side of the unit, allowing easy and quick access. The pattern selector now offers stereo, cardiod, omni, and bidirectional options. The four recording patterns make great use of the awesome condenser mic set-up. Blue Microphones deserves big kudos for their great use of the condensers.

The flip side of the mic offers master volume and mute controls. The underside of this mic offers a lot of great plug-in options. In addition to threading onto the mic stand, the underside boasts a USB output, Stereo XLR output, and a zero latency headphone output. The headphone output allows for volume control and amplifier use, too. Combining the Stereo XLR and USB output options makes the Blue Yeti Pro a true recording first. Musicians and sound artists can now use this great mic both at home and in professional studios. The XLR output allows for direct feeding into soundboards, as yet unheard of in the world of USB mics.

The mic can be powered either by its USB connection or by a 48v DC connection. This adds to the versatility of the equipment and allays the frustrations of recording engineers and sound artists making field recordings who have been frustrated by the inability to easily use one mic both with traditional soundboards and computer-based recording applications. The Yeti Pro weighs about 1.2 pounds and makes a great addition to your travel recording gear.

This mic has been particularly well-received by podcasters. The ability to make on-the-fly recording adjustments and the easy computer interface make this mic a true winner in this category. Directional mics also allow for great sound control in a home recording studio. The Yeti Pro eliminates the nasty hiss that cheap USB-based mics are notorious for. Again, it offers a great interface for pro and semi-pro audio engineers, as well as a great interface for novices who are genuinely invested in learning about the recording arts.

The new Yeti can cleanly pick up sounds at a variety of levels and in a variety of registers. This makes it an ideal mic for recording band practices or other performance which combine music and vocals. The ability to listen in while recording also allows the user to tweak the recording settings as necessary. With the four pattern selections, you should run into no major problems getting exactly the sound you want, when you want it. You may need to play around with the pattern settings and brush up on your recording know-how to best take advantage of this mic, but the time spent will be well worth it.

Perhaps one of the most creative applications for the Blue Yeti Pro is using it as the audio output on a Mac (we have heard that a custom driver for Windows-based systems can make this trick possible, too). Mac systems boast great audio, but they do not match the high-resolution output that this mic makes possible. Plus, the Yeti Pro is attractive and can easily find a permanent place on your desk or in your home recording studio.

The new Yeti Pro from Blue Microphones offers an improvement over their very popular Yeti and Snowball offerings. The Yeti Pro boasts unparalleled sound quality and recording ability for a USB make.
